Very deep insight. Sometimes God takes away everything including the joy so that we can focus on Him, later the joy will fill in our hearts when our faith is tested after the trials.
Hebrews 12: 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
1 Peter 1: 6: 6In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
From these two verses, we can clearly see that when we are disciplined or facing trials, it is natural for us to lose the joy although we by faith know the great inheritance in heaven.
Joy is a grace and gift from God. We can't force it by our own capabilities. We have to pray for the faith from God. As you said, we need to learn it.
